Gifts and Donations Policy

Policy Statement of the Mount Calm Public Library

Donations of Materials

The Mount Calm Public Library welcomes gifts of new and used books, and materials in other formats, such as videos, audio books, DVDs, etc. Such materials must be in good condition. Items will be reviewed by staff for possible placement in the collection.

All donated materials become the property of the Mount Calm Public Library and may be given to other libraries, sold, traded, or discarded. Donated items will not be returned to the donor.

The library will issue a receipt for the materials donated, stating the number of items. It will not provide an appraisal for any donations. It is recommended that the donor make a list of items donated, as it is the donor's responsibility to establish fair market value for tax purposes.

Monetary Gifts

The Mount Calm Library especially welcomes monetary gifts, bequests, and memorial or honorary contributions. Funds so donated will be used to purchase materials and/or support the general mission of the library.

When books are purchased with memorial or honorary gifts in the amount of $20.00 or more, those items will be identified with a donor plate. Memorial and honorary gifts below $20.00 will go into the general fund.

For all memorial donations, regardless of the amount, the library will send a card to the relative designated by the donor indicating that a gift has been made. A card will also be sent to each honoree indicating from whom the gift has been given. A memorial/honor book is kept at the library, listing the name of the deceased or honoree and the name of the donor.

A donor who would like to make a monetary donation to enhance a specific collection in the library should contact the Library Director.

Acceptance of donations of equipment, real estate, stock, artifacts, works of art, collections, etc., will be determined by the Library Director based on their suitability to the purposes and needs of the library, the library's ability to cover insurance and maintenance costs, and space considerations associated with the donation.

Trust Donations

A donor may also make a monetary contribution to the Mount Calm Public Library Trust Fund, which was created for the benefit of the library and is used to enhance the mission of the library.

For a gift of $500 or more a donor will be honored with a plaque added to the wall in the entrance hall of the library. The size of plaques is not determined by the amount of the gift. Wording on the plaque is at the discretion of the donor, within the constraints of size limitations. The library will absorb the cost of the plaque.
